South Pier mooring chains project update
From Jersey Marinas,
06 June 2011
The remaining RSJs have returned from the UK, having now been galvanised.
The new pontoon retaining brackets have been fabricated and are awaiting installation once the pontoons are repositioned.
The scaffold cages along the western arm have now been removed to allow repositioning of the dinghy pontoon.
The 2 swan neck fittings, repositioned in anticipation of the temporary moving of part of the dinghy pontoon, are due to be removed this week and the 2 RSJs for the new South Pier working pontoon are planned to be installed on Tuesday 7 June (the pontoons were not moved earlier as initially planned; however, this has not caused any noticeable delays or problems with the drying blocks).
Repositioning of the existing dinghy pontoon, in its current configuration, will happen on Wednesday 8 June or Thursday 9 June pending the completed installation of the 2 South Pier RSJs. The pontoon will not initially be set in its final position as considerable adjustment of the sections will be needed once there is a rigid fixing to the RSJs. It is planned to install the South Pier working pontoons within 24 hours of the move, to avoid any prolonged disruption to existing bookings.
Once the dinghy pontoon is in its final position, it will not be fully operational until after the arrival and installation of the new rigid mooring pontoons, as an additional joining section will need to be installed, together with a joining ramp. We would like to remind boat owners that although the dinghy pontoon will be fixed in position, it will remain closed until works are fully completed.
The scaffolding will be re-erected along the southern pier arm during the coming week to allow for the contractors to continue drilling and installing the remaining RSJs.
Mooring tags, designed to identify connection points, are due to be installed this coming week, at which time a letter will be sent to each boat owner which will confirm a final mooring position. Guidelines for chain lengths will also be included.
Boat owners should be advised that once informed of their new mooring position and chain length, they will be able to start installing their moorings. However, they will not be able to move onto their moorings until all works have been fully completed.
If any boat owner is expecting to be away from the Island during the repatriation period, we would respectfully ask that they notify the Marine Leisure Centre on 447730 in order that their stay in the temporary berth / mooring location can be extended accordingly.
