Sailor in Greece calls sister in Jersey for help

From Jersey Coastguard,
31 August 2011

In the early hours of Saturday (27 August), Marine Officer Bjorn Risebrow received a 999 call from a very concerned woman in Jersey. Her sister had called her to say she was sailing around the Greek Islands with 1 other adult and a 13 year old onboard, and that the yacht had broken down and they had lost control of the vessel.

Details of the incident were immediately passed on to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Falmouth. MRCC Falmouth later contacted Jersey Coastguard to confirm they had managed to talk to the occupants onboard the yacht in Greek waters, and that they were declaring a mayday and details had been passed on to the Greek MRCC.

The Greek MRCC sent a helicopter, a passenger vessel and a fishing vessel which were nearby to assist the stricken yacht which was just metres away from being washed up on rocks. The fishing vessel secured a line and safely towed the yacht back to a local port.
