Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG)

Part of the responsibility of the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is to carry out rescues. This may include freeing people who are trapped, along with special rescues involving transport (on land or water).

The Fire and Rescue Service may also use its resources for inshore rescues and fire incidents at sea within territorial waters.

The service is currently one of 15 coastal fire and rescue services around the UK that have partnered with the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) for dealing with fire, chemical release and industrial accidents on vessels and structures at sea under the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG).

If Jersey Coastguard received a distress or urgency call from a vessel reporting a fire or injury on board within territorial waters, the MIRG team would be called upon to respond, along with a support vessel and / or helicopter transport to the scene of the incident.
