The World
On August 23, Jersey welcomed the return of 'The World' to it's shores. 177 passengers were on board and all had the opportunity of sampling the best that Jersey has to offer during the 2 day stop over. The World is 196 metres long and it is the largest privately owned yacht on the planet.
Since it's launch in 2002, the ship has served as a residential community owned by it's residents. The residents, from about 40 different countries, live on board as the ship slowly circumnavigates the globe, staying in most ports from 2 to 5 days. Some residents live on board full time while others visit their floating home periodically throughout the year.
The 43,524 tonne ship has 165 residential units ranging from studio apartments with an approximate value of £375K to a 2 bedroom ocean residence valued at around £2 million. There are also 'World suites' which cost up to £10 million. The monthly maintenance, fuel and crew costs start at £12.5K and that's just for the smaller units. 250 crew support an average of between 100-200 passengers and guests at any given time.
