Marine service vessels

These vessels are manned by the marine section and provide:

  • transport for Jersey Harbours Pilot Service
  • 24/7 cover for assisting ferries and any maritime emergencies
  • towage, fire fighting, oil pollution, salvage and search and rescue for Jersey Coastguard
  • transport for maintenance of slipways and some properties at Les Minquiers and Les Ecrehous reefs

They also undertake maintenance of all navigational buoys and beacons within Jersey waters.

Duke of Normandy

  • 26 metre Damen Shoalbuster tug/workboat.
  • 28 ton bollard pull
  • ship fire fighting monitors with a reach of 95 metres
  • hydraulic crane capable of lifting 5 ton at 18 metres, and 12 ton at 6 metres
  • Lamor oil recovery system, holding tanks for recovered oil
  • portable salvage pump with a capacity of 300lt/m
  • ‘A’ frame and 8 ton plough for bed levelling and dredging
  • towing winch with 600metre of towing wire

The main roles of the Duke of Normandy are buoy and beacon maintenance, inspecting or changing every buoy annually.

Rival

  • used for other duties depending on the work load of the Pilot Service

Le Fret

  • Goodchild 38 foot Pilot Boat
  • relief Pilot boat

Le Fret's main role is for transport for navigational maintenance and transport to outlying reefs. It also provides transport for official groups to Reefs and other ports around the Channel Islands.

Halcyon

  • 8 metre open aluminium workboat with a 98hp inboard diesel engine
  • tough purpose built workboat
  • transports men and equipment on and off reefs and beacon
  • 100 gallon freshwater tank for running a power washing stages etc
  • 1 ton winch
  • built in salvage pump
  • 0.9 ton bollard pull for pushing smaller vessels

Halcyon is used as a safety boat for men working around the harbour, and also for general towing around the harbour.

Skippy

  • 8 x 3 metre aluminium catamaran with a 20hp outboard
  • fitted with removable skips for collecting rubbish around the marinas and harbour

Skippy is used as a dive platform for the Transport and Technical Services dive team as well as a general work platform for work around the harbour.

RIB

  • Avon 4.7 metre RIB
  • open 16 foot GRP boat with a 15hp outboard motor

The RIB is used as a general safety boat for work around the harbour, as well as transport to inshore buoys and beacons. It is also used as a general run about for work in St Helier Harbour.

Other States vessels

‘D’ class inshore lifeboats

Jersey Fire and Rescue inshore craft ‘Alpha’ and ‘Bravo’ are ‘D’ class inshore lifeboats manned by duty personnel. They are available for search and rescue use at all times.

The craft are of all inflatable construction and are powered by petrol driven 40hp outboard engines. They are capable of being manually righted by the crew after capsize, and the engine is fitted with a post immersion restart system (PIRS).

States Fisheries Protection Vessel

The States Fisheries Protection Vessel ‘Norman Le Brocq’ is a 15 metre multi-purpose craft. It is capable of operating as either a patrol vessel or as a platform for fisheries research. 

The vessel is a valuable marine asset to the Island, and whilst its core role of fisheries management must take a high priority, it is available to Jersey Coastguard for limited use of an emergency asset.

Whilst at sea, the vessel is always available to assist in any serious maritime emergencies.

Norman Le Brocq is berthed at La Collette with the main fishing fleet.
